{filename} These images follow the work of Kulika Uganda, a small Non Government Organisation (NGO) that trains farmers all over Uganda in sustainable organic agriculture, environmental conservation and livelihoods security. Uganda’s economy is predominantly agrarian, with most farmers engaging in small scale subsistence agriculture, operating an average of 2-4 acres of owned or borrowed land. Kulika Uganda has noted that many of the Ugandan traditional sustainable farming methods have lapsed due to population growth and the promotion of modern conventional agricultural practices, which are often beyond the means of resource-poor smallholder farmers. Kulika Uganda runs Sustainable Organic Agriculture Training Programs to equip farmers with knowledge, skills, attitudes and values of sustainable agriculture with the purpose of increasing productivity, food security and income. The farmers are shown how to widen the variety of their crops, which can result in an improvement of their nutrition for close and extended family. By increasing productivity, the farmers are able to take crops to market and generate a financial income that can then be used to buy essential medicine and pay children’s school costs. The farmers also receive training in administration and management of finances. In addition, Kulika Uganda runs a Tutor Training Programme and trainees are qualified to facilitate and share their skills with other farmers. Kulika also recognises that as a country develops it needs people who have the skills to meet new challenges. To this respect, support is also extended to individuals through the Kulika run Education Program. Students are selected by Kulika to undertake specialised courses at tertiary and higher institutions of learning to enhance their efficiency in service.
