Ms Betty Okiru cooking in a hut (kitchen) using a fuel-efficient stove. The stove is constructed in a way that means it uses the least amount of wood (saving about 60%). It is built of local materials – mud, ant hill soil, cow dung and ash making it cheap and highly sustainable. A chimney is built into the back to remove the smoke from the hut protecting the person who is cooking. Cooking on fires without this kind of chimney is a major cause of respiratory disease and eye problems among women due to the wood smoke. Betty lives with her husband Francis Okiru in the Pallisa district of Uganda. Francis joined the Kulika project in 2003 and received training in Sustainable Organic Agriculture which he continues to apply successfully on his farm.
