Margaret Nakazi is a lone parent with six children. Her husband has recently passed away, and she now supplies all the family food and other needs. The mortality rate for children in Uganda nationally is 122/1000 (Kabale District Report 2002). Margaret is managing to bring up her six children who are well nourished and healthy. Trained with Kulika, here she is pictured here processing cassava with the help of her family on the farm in Nakasongola district. Cassava takes a minimum of six months to harvest and it is a staple food for home consumption. She is pictured here with the chicken house that she has built. She still has to thatch and mud the walls during the next rain season. Water becomes very scarce and is a very big problem during the dry season!
